Depth Of Field
Depth of Field
Depth of field might make the difference between an average photo and a really good photo. Depth of field is the relative distance in front of a subject that is in focus. Depth of field is defined as the range in which the photo is in focus. Depth of field is not a value, but a perception. Depth of field is a characteristic of a camera that can be used to enhance the image composition of the photo. Depth of field is inversely proportional to focal length, according to the following formula:The above equation assumes that the two lenses are used with identical cameras from the same position, as in Figure 3(a) and Figure 3(b).
Aperture
The correct use of the Aperture will control the ‘Depth of Field’. In its most basic form, aperture is the size of the hole in the lens of the camera that determines how much light is let into the camera and onto the film or CCD in a digital camera. Most lenses have apertures in the range of f3. Some professional lenses have an increased range of aperture settings, sometimes as wide open as f1. If you can get hold of an SLR camera with something called 'aperture preview' (usually a lever or button on the side of the lens or camera body) it will help you to understand how aperture works by giving you a visual idea of how the image will turn out, before you actually take it. The aperture setting you use also effects something called the 'depth of field', as well as the amount of light that is let through the lens. There should be a setting on these cameras called “aperture priority mode”, often labelled as 'AV' or 'A' mode on the camera's setting dial. By putting the camera in aperture priority mode – it means that WE select the aperture that we feel would best suit the image (using the knowledge you have learned in this article), and the light meter in the camera does the rest by selecting the correct shutter speed so the film still gets the right amount of light to be correctly exposed. Lens have f-numbers which reduce the aperture diameter when taking a picture and increases the depth of field in the process. It does, however, reduce light being transmitted, increasing diffraction and placing some limits on what can and cannot be reduced with the aperture. In the film industry, cinematographers will generally stick with two types of apertures, one for interior shots and one for exterior shots, to give consistency throughout the film. Changing the aperture results in a need to change the shutter speed (either manually or the camera can most likely do that for you automatically). The wider the aperture the more light that penetrates the lens and the faster the shutter speed needs to be so there is a limit to how wide you can set the aperture to. You will get a sense of how your photo will look like and how blurry the background will be after playing with different lenses, different apertures and different distances from your object. You will find out that it is extremely easy to get a blurry background photo using this method even without setting the aperture. Since the lens axis is perpendicular to the plane, the focus is parallel to the image, too. However, if the lens for some reason is not perpendicular, the image plane is capable of being rotated to change the depth of field. This is accomplished through camera movements, such as tilting or rotating the lens. Depth of field is inversely proportional to focal length, according to the following formula:The above equation assumes that the two lenses are used with identical cameras from the same position, as in Figure 3(a) and Figure 3(b). Hasselblad's high-end cameras come with software that can perform what it calls Digital Auto Correction, which fixes chromatic aberration and various other problems based specifically on the setting of the lens when the photo was taken.
Focus
Depth of field is defined as the range in which the photo is in focus. Since clear focus can only occur at a single distance, this becomes the focal point of any image. The field flows outwards in a circle, where the further from the center you get the less focused an image will be from the point of origin. Objects outside of that field will appear blurry and out of focus in many cases. Backgrounds can be displaced in portraits to focus on the subject only depending on the tightness of the depth of field. Tinkering with different settings and the depth of field will show you how your camera reacts to different points of focus and backgrounds to give you the best picture. For example an infinite depth of field means that the photo will be in focus from a certain distance from the camera and up to infinity. The term is often confused with depth of focus, which is the distance the film plane can be moved from the point of optimum focus while maintaining an acceptably sharp image. For each combination of f-number and focal length, focusing on one object distance will maximise depth of field; that object distance is known as the hyperfocal distance. The depth of field forward of the hyperfocal point is one-half the hyperfocal distance, and everything beyond the hyperfocal point is in focus. The depth is also dependant on the focal length of the lens and the distance on which the lens is focused. Note that where you focus has a bearing on your final image. For example, focus on the foreground subject when using a small f/number, and the background subject will probably be out of focus.

The camera has to be focused on a particular object or at a certain point in the scene, whether that be; the foreground; in the middle of our field of view; or in the background. The subject can be isolated from its background by using shallow dept of field. In conclusion shooting dramatic blurry background photos is easy with some minimal understanding of depth of field and some experimenting.
